In Singapore, there is currently no readily accessible blood or blood products available for pets when the need arises for a transfusion procedure. Very often we rely on clients to look for a blood donor for their own pets. This can be very nerve-wrecking and time consuming. Further to that, blood products collected from recipient’s friends may not always be a match to the recipient.

At JVC, one of the ways we are hoping to improve our quality of service is to have readily accessible blood products for patients requiring transfusions. The truth of the matter is that one unit of whole blood can help save the lives of a number of animals.

Here is how you can help us to build up a good animal blood bank reserve. If your pet falls into the following category and you wish to be a donor, please make arrangements with a member of our staff to have a blood donation appointment scheduled.

Blood Donation

On the day of blood donation, your pet will be given a complete physical examination to deem its fitness to donate blood. A small amount of blood will be taken for initial screening which includes a full blood test, thyroid blood test, heartworm and tick blood panels for dogs / feline aids and leukaemia for cats, urinalysis and blood typing (all these test will be performed absolute free for all blood donor pets). When the pet donor has passed the initial screening test, blood will then be collected from the donor pet. A rough gauge as to the amount of blood we collect is based on the following:

  • For dogs, up to 20mls/kg of whole blood can be collected at one go.
  • For cats, up to 10mls/kg of whole blood can be collected at one go.

If donor pets fidgets too much, a small dose of sedative can be given before blood collection. This is done for the safety of both donor pets and JVC doctors.

There are certain criteria that must be fulfilled in order for an animal to qualify as a blood donor. The criteria are as follows:

Canine blood donor:

  • Between 1 to 8 years old
  • Weight > 23kg
  • Good personality
  • Spayed / Neutered
  • Up to date on annual vaccinations
  • On prompt and regular deworming, tick, flea and heartworm preventative medicine

Feline blood donor:

  • Between 1 to 8 years old
  • Weight > 4kg
  • Indoor cat only
  • Spayed / Neutered
  • Up to date on annual vaccinations
  • On prompt and regular deworming, tick and flea preventative medicine

As a blood donor, your pet will automatically be qualified for the following perks:

  • Free health screen (applicable to first donation only)
  • Free pet transport for blood donation only (from second blood donation onwards)
  • Emergency consultation fee waived for any emergency visits to JVC
  • Free microchip implant after second donation

At JVC, all day surgery pets are discharged between 4:30pm to 6:30pm.

All hospitalised pets are discharged between 10:00am to 11:00am and 4:30am to 6:30pm.

If a day surgery pet / hospitalised pet is not claimed before our end-of-the-day closing time, the appropriate hospitalisation / boarding charges will be added on to your pet’s finalised bill.

Our visiting hours are from 10:00am to 11:30am and 4:00pm to 6:30pm.

As we do not want to create further stress to both your pet and other hospitalised pets, please limit the number of visitors for your pet to three at any one time. We also understand that you would love to spend as much time as possible with your hospitalised pet, but at the same time, we would also ask that you would be sensitive to the environment around especially to the visitors of other hospitalised patients.
